Serving the energy needs of the Nation's Capitol and the surrounding areas.

We represent the bargaining unit members of PEPco,PHI,Mirant Mid-Atlantic and Washington Gas/Frederick Division.

Our members are made up of various trades from the Lineman to the Power Plant Technicians; Administration workers to Meter Installers both gas and electric.

As you can see below our primary goal is to provide this service SAFELY!

No part of the service we render, nor any job that we perform, shall ever become so important that we cannot take the time to do the job safely!

As most of our members know this is on the back of every Local 1900 contract.

I would like to add a note to our members who are reading this: We are not being paid by the speed in which the work is completed so

DO NOT RUSH YOUR JOB!

Please take the necessary precautions and follow safety
proceedures.

John Holt, President Local 1900

Contractor Issues

Contractually the company can hire contracters as long as no Local 1900 member loses his/her job due to a reduction in force. But this does not mean we have to help them do it!

4 rules when you mix union workers and contractors.

1) We do not train them to do the job ..ANY JOB!

2) We do not work along side or hand in hand with them.
This means that we can onspect their work but we don't do it with them.

3) We don't loan them our tools. They are contracted to do a job so they should have their own tools!

4) Last but definitely not least they must follow the same safety guidelines and rules as we do.

John L Holt President Local 1900

President Holt testifies before DC Committee on Public Services & Consumer Affairs

In May and July Local 1900 President/Business Manager testified before D.C. Public Service commission on PEPco's failing infrastructure and the lack of trained workforce.
"Pepco has an aging workforce of which 40% will be eligible to retire in 3 to 5 years".
Along with this it has a infrastructure that is poorly maintained and is sure to cause major failures when a storm ocurrs, "the company needs to agressively hire new workers for it to be able to provide reliable electric service to the customers of D.C." says President Holt.

Utilities brace for worker shortage

John Holt, president of IBEW Local 1900, says Potomac Electric Power, or Pepco, in Washington, D.C., has scaled back its tree-trimming and pole-replacement programs because of manpower shortages, slowing customer hookups and repairs. Pepco spokesman Robert Dobkin disputes that

IBEW Takes on Big Guns at Texas Utility and Wins 254 to 218

December 20, 2006

It looked another case of corporate greed at workers’ expense
when nonunion TXU, Texas’ largest power company, led by one
of the highest paid utility executives in the U.S., announced in
June that the jobs of hundreds employees—from linemen to
clerks—would be subcontracted, reducing holidays, vacations,
sick days and overtime pay, while jeopardizing service for households
and big industries alike.

Unions Sue Over OSHA Delay on Protective Clothing

January 5, 2007

Labor unity took a step forward on Jan. 3 when the AFL-CIO joined
with the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), an affiliate
of the Change to Win Coalition, in a lawsuit to force the Occupational
Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) to implement rules requiring
employers to pay for personal protective equipment for workers.
